Following a competitive tendering process in the middle of 2021, ECG were very pleased to be awarded the contract for undertaking the Air Handling Unit Replacement Works project within Theatres 1-6 of University Hospital Ayr.
The existing AHUs which were originally installed were base build from the hospital opening in 1991 and, as such, had reached the end of their lifecycle.
This project involved our team supplying, installing, testing, commissioning and setting to work all systems, plant and equipment indicated within the specification and drawings for the Mechanical Services Works associated with the install of the new AHU serving Theatre 1.
The hospital was opened in 1991 and, as such, the existing AHUs were reaching the end of their economic life and required to be replaced. This project concerned itself with the refurbishment of Theatre 1 and 6 which were previously ventilated via a shared AHU.
We provided separate ventilation systems for each theatre, retaining the existing AHU to serve Theatre 6 and providing a new AHU for Theatre 1. The AHU was installed to initially provide ventilation via the existing ductwork distribution, matching the existing ventilation rates, but with the facility to be increased to 25 air changes per hour when the theatre is refurbished in the future.
This project called for works to be undertaken within a hospital environment, which was to remain live and operational throughout, meaning we worked in close collaboration with the hospital’s on-site team to segregate and ensure the safety of any personnel within and around the works area whilst this essential project was completed.
